You're expecting! Shopping for baby is part of the fun. But what do you really need? We've compiled a top-5 Must-haves for you to get started!

1) Baby-Specific White Noise Machine

While you may want to keep the room quiet for baby to sleep in - too much silence isn't necessarily what they are used to. During your maternity sonograms, you may recall all the noises that came with listening for baby's heart beat. The swooshing of fluids, your voice and heartbeat are muffled inside the belly, it's a pretty noisy place.

Creating a similar environmental with a baby-specific white noise machine in baby's nursery can replicate the blending of sounds they find comfort in. This also helps mute other noises that may stir and wake them. Our must-have in the studio is the Baby Shusher!

2) Swaddles

By the time baby is full term, there is very little room inside the belly for big movements. Simulating the snug feeling for newborns in the first few weeks is fantastic in helping them drift to sleep. Velcro swaddles or good old hospital blankets works wonders.

From time to time, babies can be fussy during a newborn session. We take advantage of wrapping baby up nice and tight and work on beautifully swaddled portraits while they drift off to sleep.

3) Heater & Wipe warmer

New parents will discover this very quickly during night time diaper changes - that a cold wipe will wake baby up instantly. This is especially true for winter babies! A wipe warmer to help reduce the shock in temperature will help baby feel more at ease. A warm room (not hot), is soothing for your newborn as they are less efficient in self-regulating body temperatures until more baby rolls comes along.

4) Changing Station

A well-equipped changing station is a must. Placing a change pad placed on a table is a back-saver. Stock a small quantity of the essentials within arms-reach, such as diapers, wipes, rash cream, lotion, extra clothes for baby, trash can, and toys to entertain baby.

Some parents swear by having multiple stations around the house for convenience. It's particularly helpful when you're trying to clean up an accident quickly. It can be a fully stocked change table, or just a simple pad like this.
